What is an information system?
A set of interrelated components that collect (or retrieve), process, store, and distribute information to support decision making and control in an organization
Management information system (MIS)
An MIS provides managers with information and support for effective decision making, and provides feedback on daily operations
Output, or reports, are usually generated through accumulation of transaction processing data

Each MIS is an integrated collection of subsystems, which are typically organized along functional lines within an organization

Evaluate the role played by the major types of systems in a business and their relationship to each other

Describe the information systems supporting the major business functions: sales and marketing, manufacturing and production, finance and accounting, and human resources

Different kinds of IS
1.Operational-level systems: support operational managers, keeping track of the elementary activities and transactions
2.Management-level systems: serve the monitoring, controlling, decision-making, and administrative activities
3.Strategic-level systems: help senior management tackle and address strategic issues

Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)
Management Information Systems (MIS)
Decision-Support Systems (DSS)
Executive Support Systems (ESS)
